It is a cultural and
religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint
Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The day commemorates
Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the patrimony
and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public
parades and festivals and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christian’s
denominations also attend church services and historically the Lenten
restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which has
encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption. Saint
Patrick's Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival.
Guy Fawkes Night
Guy Fawkes Night, also
known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual
commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history
begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the
Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed
beneath the House of Lords, a failed conspiracy by a group of provincial
English Catholics to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England and
replace him with a Catholic head of state. James's
Council allowed the public to celebrate the king's survival with bonfires. The
present-day Guy Fawkes Night is usually celebrated at large organized events,
centred on a bonfire and extravagant firework displays.
Boomtown
Boomtown Fair is a music and arts festival held near Winchester in England, with a capacity of around 60,000 people. Founded in 2009, the festival has an elaborate mythos, which is built upon each year and includes a town mayor, elections, and passports. The festival places emphasis upon sustainability, charity and community responsibility. Donations to various charities are made each year from the festival's profits. Tickets are donated to charity for raffles and competitions, and the festival works with Oxfam and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance who provide stewards. The festival takes place in August. It features 4 days of live music and art event that offers an array of fringe comedy and theatre. The festival has an ongoing theme surrounding the "legend" of the festival. A lot of effort goes into the decorations, and fancy dress is encouraged, adding to the vibe of the festival. The festival is divided into various 'districts', each with its own camping ground.
